During recent years I've become interested in dance rhythms in my music. My second symphony with which I am now occupied, will be a symphony in three parts, subtitled ¨Three symphonic dances¨.
The Piano trio, which was composed 1998 and premiered on a recital in 1999 featuring my chamber music, includes this aspect of dance rhythms, however here in the sense of ball-room dancing. Most obviously in the second movement which is a slow, - perhaps slightly depraved - tango in a kind of habanera rhythm.
The type of the ensemble also recalls that besides it was one of the 19th century's and henceforth most important types of ensemble in art music, it was also one of the most favoured ensemble types in entertainment music, in restaurants, ballrooms etc.
The first and the last movements in this three-movement trio could also be described as influenced by dance-music, however of a more compound nature, especially in the last movement which is a rondo. The slow tango in the second movement is interrupted by a fast scherzo section. Anders Nilsson
