Rhythm is an important ingredient in this piece and reveals something of the composer's background as a rock musician, as well as the inherent reaction of that genre against all that is stuffy in serious music. The taped part expands the register of the acoustic instruments and creates new acoustic walls.
Nilsson has toyed with conventions, making the percussionists play tunes while the saxophonists provide the rhythm. The piece is in three movements of varying character, which can be associated with different places on earth. In the first movement the parts are woven into a complex pattern, like a European city. Conga rhythms give an African touch to the second movement, while the final, with its ritardando xylophone sounds, can be an allusion to Asia.
