Ruben Fridolfson
Born in Oderljunga on 18th February 1933, died on 22nd November 1997. Fridolfson graduated as an organist at the Malmö Conservatory in 1954. He was Choir Master and Director of Music at Sion Church, Linköping, 1954-1966, while studying singing and composition with Göte Standsjö and Josef Jonsson and conducting with Herbert Blomstedt. He has been Organist and Director of Music at the Pentecostal Smyrna Church, Gothenburg, since 1966.
Ruben Fridolfson’s compositions are to a great extent designed for church occasions, and they include music for string bands, solo and choral songs, cantatas and his two oratorios Den förlorade sonen (1972) and Johannes Uppenbarelse (1978). His tonal language can be quite advanced, using both free-tonal and atonal elements as well as cluster effects. Works for the concert platform include two symphonies (No.2 1964/1976), a flute concerto, Allegro for orchestra (1975) and Music for orchestra. The City of Gothenburg commissioned a prelude for organ and wind instruments on the occasion of its 350th anniversary, and he has also received commissions from the Brass Ensemble of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
